Get Ready to Mission:Explore
CSEC members, the Geography Collective, are very pleased to announce the launch of Mission:Explore, their antidote to the culture of cotton wool kids. It has been written to inspire young people to engage with their world in the most direct way possible – by going out and having adventures.
Mission:Explore is made up of 102 missions that challenge you to (re)discover our world. Become a guerrilla explorer and extreme missioner with missions that defy gravity, see the invisible and test your mental agility. Each illustrated mission will challenge you in daring new ways. Draw, rub, smear, write, scrape and print your findings and achievements as you complete each of the missions... it's great for people aged 10 to 10,000. It is about inclusive exploration, engaging geography, challenging risk aversion and having fun.
CSEC believes that it is very important for children to experience adventurous play and risk so they can learn to manage risk for themselves.
Mission:Explore provides a great range of missions which are fun and exciting, and also allow children to learn about potential dangers and how to cope with them. By doing this, they will learn how to keep themselves and others safe from unintended injuries.
All author royalties from this first edition are being invested in free copies for children who can't afford their own. Also, until the end of Outdoor Adventure Week (2nd-11th April) if you buy 2 copies we will give a 3rd to a young person who can't afford their own.
To discover more and to order copies of Mission:Explore, please visit bit.ly/exploreoffer

Welcome to March's New CSEC Members
CSEC's membership is growing fast. Here is a list of members who have joined us in March 2010

DangerPoint is awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge
Associate members DangerPoint in Wales are proud to announce that they have been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge. This is awarded to providers who are offering good quality learning outside the classroom experiences and are managing risk effectively within their setting. Organisations will display the badge as a signal to schools that their venue has met required standards, so teachers do not need to carry out their own risk or quality assessments when visiting.
This quality badging system is an important step towards encouraging more learning outside the classroom experiences in settings as diverse as museums, adventurous activity centres, places of worship, art galleries, visitor attractions and farms, as it helps to remove the risk concerns experienced by teachers leading such trips. Where practical safety education providers are concerned, it complements the LASER accreditation system which ensures the quality of the learning experiences related to all aspects of safety that are taking place. CSEC are currently working with the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom and LASER to produce a dual badging certificate which will provide an excellent mark of quality assurance for all practical safety education providers. More information about this scheme will be available soon.
