Fact or fiction?

HSE Myth of the month

We have all heard the stories of health and safety, supposedly gone mad. Children made to wear goggles to use blu tack, not being allowed to play conkers, or run in the playground.

In fact, there are so many unfounded health and safety myths circulating that the Health and Safety Executive have a myth of the month website.

There is no doubt that these stories originated somewhere, but they are not generally based in real health and safety guidelines. They are often misconceptions based on rumours or stories in the media, fear of legal action, or a convenient excuse. On the HSE website, the real considerations are discussed with each myth and further guidance about sensible risk management is available from www.hse.gov.uk/risk/principles.htm.

When considering the wellbeing of children and young people, it is important that common sense should prevail. Stimulating and challenging activities should be encouraged, to allow children and young people to reach their full potential. These activities should be made as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible.
