CSEC heads South!

As part of CSEC’s aims to increase its footprint in the South West and South East, a membership seminar was held in Poole. It was organised by CSEC and hosted by the RNLI (CSEC021). A seminar also took place in Bodmin and was hosted by NHS Cornwall Isles of Scilly (CSEC105) and Flashpoint (CSEC023). The aim of these membership seminars is to show how organisations can get involved with the work of CSEC. There are areas of the UK with a low CSEC presence and these seminars are designed to target those areas. Those who attended the meetings found them to be useful, informative and engaging. The agenda included an introduction to CSEC by project manager John Vallender, and CSEC co-ordinators Jason Cole, Craig Keegan and Nicola Smith all gave presentations on CSEC projects and resources. Steve Wills from the RNLI (CSEC021) and Ellen McConell from Flashpoint (CSEC023) also delivered presentations at their respective seminars which focused on their work and motivations for joining CSEC.

More membership seminars are scheduled for this month. The next is due to take place on November 29th and is being hosted by Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre (CSEC110) in Norfolk. If you know of any organisations in and around Norfolk for whom it may be relevant to attend or if any CSEC members would like to host a future CSEC membership seminar, please email Irene Aserie

Carbon Monoxide Hotspot Report 2010

The Gas Safety Trust is proud to launch the Carbon Monoxide Hotspot Report 2010. This unique piece of research indicates that whilst we are monitoring a reduction in ‘actual’ carbon monoxide deaths from natural gas and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) throughout the United Kingdom, we are still recording considerably high numbers of serious exposure incidents. He also describes the CSEC approach of encouraging learning about risk management in order to enable young people to develop maturity, self sufficiency and resilience. A copy of this letter can be found here.

Risk Competence Questionnaire

In order to fully define the parameters and aims of high quality practical safety education, the CSEC team are asking all members if they could fill in a questionnaire. This is intended to help us identify competences - what children and young people could reasonably be expected to know and be able to - do to reduce unintended injuries to themselves and to others.

CSEC will use the results from this questionnaire to construct and publish an unintended injury competence framework. You will already have been sent a form, but it is also available below. Your help will be very much appreciated.
